RANCHO MURIETA, CA (MPG) - Cosumnes River Little League President Dan Reid paused practice briefly on April 29 to present this year’s scholarship winners during a special ceremony at Stonehouse Park.
The awards are typically announced on opening day, but scheduling changes led to the stand-alone presentation.
“Our timing was a little off this year,” Reid said, “But we have two outstanding former CRLL players who are the recipients of the 2025 scholarship, and I want to bring them out here so we can honor them.”
The first honoree, Madeline Lawson, grew up in Rancho Murieta and began her journey with the league in T-ball. She played through every level, participated in All-Stars and now pitches for Pleasant Grove High School’s varsity softball team.
“She’s an academic giant,” Reid said. “Her GPA is at 4.6—maybe 4.545—so she’s getting it done on the field and in the classroom.”
Lawson will attend Columbia University in the fall, where she plans to major in biology and play softball.
“She wants to be a geneticist,” Reid added. “So watch out for Madeline—on the field, in the lab or at a pharmaceutical company near you.”
The second scholarship was awarded to Owen Carmichael, also a Rancho Murieta native, who spent nine seasons in the league before returning as an umpire for five years.
“For those of us with younger kids, we only know him as an umpire,” Reid said. “We don’t know about his prowess out here on the baseball field.”
Carmichael, a senior at Jesuit High School, holds a 3.9 GPA and has juggled academics with baseball, water polo and participation in the finance club. He plans to attend Baylor University, where he’s considering a future in finance or sports management.
“He had a whole stack of acceptance letters,” Reid noted. “He’s a giant in the classroom, and he is continuing to give back to CRLL.”
The short ceremony closed with the national anthem played over the loudspeakers, capping a proud moment for the league and its extended community.
