SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Each May, in celebration of Older Americans Month, Sacramento County recognizes older adults who make a meaningful impact in their communities. This year, five individuals—including Rancho Murieta’s Bonnie Shewchuk—were honored with the Five Over 50 Volunteer Award by the Sacramento County Adult and Aging Commission.

According to a Sacramento County news release, the honorees exemplify the power of volunteerism and the vital role older adults play in strengthening communities. The 2025 award recipients, representing each of the county’s five districts, were formally recognized during the May 20 meeting of the Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Rosario Rodrigues selected Shewchuk to represent District 4.

“Bonnie Shewchuk is an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Rancho Murieta, where she embodies the club’s mission to ‘Change the World, One Community and One Child at a Time,’” Rodrigues wrote in her newsletter.

“Whether organizing local events or supporting youth programs, Bonnie’s contributions uplift the Rancho Murieta community and reflect a commitment to service,” Rodrigues added.

Also honored were Gene Inderkum, District 1; Barbara Heinrich, District 2; Barbara Farley, District 3, and Tony Rutchena, District 5.

As Sacramento County celebrates Older Americans Month, the Five Over 50 Volunteer Award winners serve as a reminder that age isn’t a barrier to meaningful contribution, according to the news release.

“These five volunteers are not only role models in Sacramento County – they are also a reminder that when you combine your passion with helping others, you can make a lasting impact,” it said.
