Three Grass Fires in Three Days Near Rancho Murieta

Jun 23, 2025 09:35AM ● By Joe Wirt

A firefighter mops up after a grass fire broke out just before noon on Sunday, June 22 behind Murieta Gardens. The fire came within 20 feet of a fence enclosing the propane tank in the subdivision. But the wind blew the flames away from the houses toward the river levee.

CALFIRE Battalion Chief John Reis estimated that two to three acres of grass had burned under the Red Flag conditions. He didn’t know the cause. It was the third fire in as many days. On June 21, firefighters quickly extinguished a small spot fire off Jackson Highway near Murieta Drive. A day earlier, on June 20, a brush fire on the Hutchinson Ranch—across the Cosumnes River from the airport—was also quickly put out. Photo by Gail Bullen
