RANCHO MURIETA, CA (MPG) - A white SUV crashed into the Rancho Murieta North Gate late May 17, overturning after striking the gate structure and causing major damage to the entry area, according to Rancho Murieta Community Services District security logs and information provided by the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. at the North Gate on Murieta Parkway just off Jackson Highway.

According to one RMCSD security account, the inbound vehicle was traveling “at a high rate of speed” when it changed from the inner resident lane into the guest lane, striking the median and a pole before colliding with the gate structure and overturning.

A second security account stated that a white Ford Explorer traveling westbound on Jackson Highway turned northbound onto Murieta Parkway “at a high rate of speed” and collided with a metal bollard between the visitor lane and the first resident lane. The impact reportedly caused the SUV to become airborne, strike the gatehouse and entry hardware, and overturn beyond the visitor lane arm.

CHP spokesperson Officer Angie Monroe said the male driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, crashed into the Rancho Murieta security kiosk and overturned in the visitor lane, causing substantial property damage. CHP said alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The security officer who arrived minutes after the crash observed three bystanders attempting to assist the trapped driver, according to the security log. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel arrived within minutes and extricated the driver from the vehicle before transporting him by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Monroe said the driver, a Sacramento resident in his late 30s, according to DMV information, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence but released to the hospital because of major injuries.

A security officer who was inside the kiosk at the time of the crash witnessed the collision but was not injured, according to CHP.

The crash caused significant damage to the North Gate, including a broken window, destroyed gate arm and damaged scanner equipment, according to the security log.
